The Pool is named Hector, and was salvaged from a backyard in Tomball, TX where it had been overturned and neglected. It required no less than 10 of the crew to lift its enormous fiberglass mass and it had to be downsized to fit through the high school door. It was brought to life by Chris Lancaster and his magical Spackle. Over the course of the show the pool (yes a pool on stage!) exploits every association we attach to water: the sea, the womb, a highway, a desert, sensuality, purity, and so much else. Most importantly to Ovid's stories, the pool becomes the crucible of transformation. As a character rises from the surface, dripping and soggy from this universal solvent, it is an easy matter for the mind's eye to supply the rest of the metamorphosis to a bird or god or ghost. Metamorphoses is a play by American playwright Mary Zimmerman adapted from the classic Ovid poem, Metamorphoses. The set was designed by Lindsay Brull and was drawn and painted by any artistic students who were willing to help. The design incorporates age-old images of Greek gods and goddesses on a massive towering wall. The costumes were conceived and manufactured by Jamie Sutphen. They were carefully crafted to maintain their beauty while being repeatedly dunked in water.
